Nestled in the heart of Central Vermont, Rock of Ages is home to the world’s largest deep-hole, dimension granite quarries, which have been featured in motion pictures such as Star Trek (2009) and The Stone Whistle, numerous television shows, such as Modern Marvels and Made In America, and in dozens of magazines, such as National Geographic, Euro and Vermont Life Magazine. Our quarries have inspired notable photographers like Edward Burtynsky, and our artisans have served as muse to painter Norman Rockwell.

The eclectic nature of the Rock of Ages’ online store mirrors the cosmopolitan nature of the Barre granite industry itself. Begun by Vermont’s pioneers in the 1790s, the industry exploded in the last quarter of the 19th century as improvements in cutting technology and transportation created national markets for Barre’s fine granite. Immigrants came to Barre by the thousands from all parts of the world, seeking the American Dream, bringing with them their talents, their passion and their culture, melding with and enriching the then-entrenched Yankee heritage, transforming the tiny hamlet of Barre, Vermont, into a cosmopolitan center of unrivaled granite artistry.

Today this rich heritage continues. Rock of Ages quarries fine granites in Barre and Bethel, Vermont, and our artisans, like alchemists of old, transmute rough blocks of unforgiving stone into delicate, breathtaking works of art.

Our store features granite gifts made in Vermont from Vermont and imported granites, select granite and stone gifts from around the world, granite jewelry made by Marcelle Moran, who has worked at our Visitors Center for 50 years, stone jewelry made here from domestic and imported gemstones and a variety of Vermont specialty gifts and foods made for you by our friends and neighbors.
